Consider Pet Foster Care

Our faultering economy has hit everyone hard. Even our furry friends have felt the brunt of it. In addition to all the usual abused and unwanted animals that animal shelters care for on a daily basis, many pets that owners just can't afford to keep anymore are being added to the ranks of homeless animals. Shelters only have a limited amount of space and staff to take care of the ever increasing demand. As a result, many, many animals are being euthanized to make room for the new arrivals.

You can help these poor animals. Consider becoming a pet foster parent. Almost all animal shelters would welcome your help, and you would be maximizing the amount of animals that can be saved from euthanasia. All you need to foster is room in your heart and in your home. All types of animals are in need of foster homes, from cats and dogs to rabbits and horses. Fostering requires providing for the basic needs of the animals, as well as socialization and affection. Sometimes Foster Parents care for orphaned animals that need extra attention, or animals that are recovering from an illness or injury. The pet foster parents also help to teach the animal proper behavior in a home environment. Animal foster parents are often the deciding factor in whether or not a pet finds a permanent home. Many of the animals that come into the shelters have never been part of a loving environment. Foster homes are where they learn to trust and flourish.

The benefits of fostering an animal are not just for the animal, either. Children learn empathy and responsibility from caring for an animal. Senior citizens can find companionship and purpose while providing a life saving service for a pet. Prospective pet owners can foster an animal to see if pet ownership will really fit into their lifestyle. Some animal organizations also work with correctional facilities to match a pet with an inmate. Both benefit from the relationship between pet and foster parent.

The unwanted animal population is enormous. Responsible pet ownership is the key to reducing these animals. If you have a pet, please spay or neuter it. Many areas have low cost programs to help. If you have the room in your home and the yearning in your heart to literally become a lifesaver to these animals, call your local animal shelter and inquire about their pet fostering program. You can make a difference in this vast problem, and feel good about yourself too!
